Leave it to me to rain on everybody’s parade, but I just can’t feel any actual joy that the psycho fucking trans-vag ultrasound requirement in VA was dropped. I think republicans strategically propose heinous policies like this in order to slip in the “chipping away” policies.
McDonnell “backed down” on the trans-vag ultrasound, but did you notice that they still managed to squeak in mandatory ultrasounds? Medically unnecessary abdominal ultrasounds are now required. Also, doctors are still required to offer the trans-vag ultrasounds. The only difference is that now women are allowed to refuse the invasive procedure. Consent FTW.
By pitching abjectly ridiculous regulations like forced invasive ultrasounds, anti-choicers win even when they’re watered down. McDonnell gets to take credit for being reasonable when he settles for external ultrasounds. Pro-choicers get to celebrate their “victory,” which isn’t a victory at all. It’s just a slightly smaller amount of insanity. Conservative ‘chipping-away” laws are still being implemented. Nobody is howling about them because we’re so distracted by the blatantly offensive proposals.
The reality is that VA is now the tenth state to require a medically unnecessary ultrasound before abortion. McDonnell still got his stumbling block into place, and somehow pro-choice people consider it a victory. We’re celebrating when the news is actually still very bad.

No you’re absolutely right. Isn’t this tactic called shifting the overton window? They propose policies which are so far-fetched and extreme they know they won’t pass, so when they offer a “compromise” they get what they wanted all along and fool us into thinking we’ve dodged a bullet. And yet in reality it keeps shifting politics further and further to the right to the point where we’re agreeing to things that a decade ago would have seemed preposterous. It honestly makes me sick.

  26. nemophilablues said: But the abdominal are useless, so in the end it means no ultrasounds. It’s just asshattery on paper instead of in practice: just as offensive without all the rape!
